The Super-Fast Thermapen from ThermoWorks has been a favorite among restaurant chains, health inspectors and quality managers worldwide. Hundreds of thousands are in use. The clever fold-away probe and the simple pocket design replace more costly and bulky handheld thermometers while using the same professional thermocouple technology. This new generation Thermapen introduces a robust, splash-proof design with molded-in seals to protect the thermometer from wet hands and kitchen splashes. SPEED & ACCURACY Even more accurate than before and slightly faster! Our proprietary circuit yields accuracies better than ±0.7¡F. That includes all errors! (many competitors don't include the probe error in their spec.) Each unit comes with a NIST-Traceable certificate of calibration showing test results for the individual thermometer. Resolution is now 0.1¡ over the full range. Improvements in the probe technology now yield a blazing fast speed of 3 seconds to a full temperature reading. NO CABLES! The components most likely to fail in a commercial thermometer are the cable and its connector. Also, the typical handheld meter and probe combination requires two hands. After a few too many steaks & chicken just slightly under- or over-done, I invested in this thermometer. I say "invested" because it's fairly expensive. Turns out that it's worth it. It is very sturdy, and the design is smart (although perhaps a little difficult to use if you hold it left-handed). It has three advantages compared to many other thermometers.

1. It's very thin - no more massive holes in the chicken breast.

2. The part that registers the temperature is at the very tip of the probe (I think it's only about an eighth of an inch) and so you read the temperature very "locally" - exactly where you've placed the tip. The tiny tip is especially useful if you're grilling a thin piece of meat - you can get the temperature right in the center of the meat, which would be impossible with some of the chunky big thermometers.

3. It reads within 2-3 seconds, then stabilizes. So, it means you have the lid of the BBQ open for a shorter time. In fact, you can take several reads at different places (useful when cooking larger things, like whole chicken or turkey) without the BBQ cooling down too much.

I received a Thermapen for my birthday 2.5 years ago. It wasn't the splash-proof model but was a $100 Thermapen nonetheless. I loved it. It was fast and accurate and I loved the large display.

After about 6 months, I started having trouble with the display. The right side of the 2nd to last digit would not display occassionally. While I could still make out what the digit was, it was annoying nonetheless. It wouldn't behave that way every time, just occassionally. I probably should have returned it but never got around to doing so. After a year or so, I started having trouble where the pen would not come on at all the first time I'd open it. I had to shut it and re-open it to get the display to come on. This was even with a fresh battery.

Finally, last week, my Thermapen completely died. A new battery made no difference. The pen will not turn on at all. I checked the warranty - only 1 year so I'm out of luck. For nearly $100, this pen should have a better warranty and definitely should last more than 2.5 years.

Over the past 2 years I have bought 5 food thermometers and all have been as bad as one another. Thank goodness I found this Thermapen. It does exactly what it says it will do, speedy accurate readings every time. It also feels well built so I'm hoping to have many years or trouble free service out of it too.
