Acer AS3830TG-6431 Review by BillWork

Got this for schoolwork and mobile gaming. I have been surprised over
and over again while playing games on it: it outperforms my
expectations consistently. So far I have played Fallout New Vegas,
Just Cause 2, and League of Legends. Each game runs on high to maximum
settings perfectly. Only glitch is you must be sure it is using the
dedicated card, or it will "only" run games at medium settings with
the integrated card (which is also more powerful than I anticipated).
It has done that a couple of times.

Build quality is as I expected. Keyboard is nice. Battery life is
adequate so far (5 - 10 hours depending on application). The power
supply is high quality brand (HIPRO 90Wh).

Okay, so here is my pleasant surprise. The laptop actually came with
i5 2430m instead of the i5 2410m--higher number so it MUST be better!
But seriously, I've done some research online (as well as running
Powermark benchmarks) and it appears that the 2430m is handily
superior to its 9 month old predecessor. I'm not sure why Acer didn't
advertise the change, but there it is.

Overall, it is a great balance between performance, mobility, and
value. I'm loving it!

This is one of the best value laptop deals out there. I've had it for about a month now, and I'm still very impressed with everything it's offered. There has not been a single issue with it so far. I'm a big multi-tasker, and so I usually need a computer that can handle the multitudes of programs that have opened at one time (which includes photoshop, dreamweaver, chrome, microsoft word, as well as ram-intensive games). This computer not only handles everything I dish at it, but it handles it very smoothly. Although I should be studying, I also run the computer for 8 hours on high performance videogames each day, and the laptop does not even come close to having a heat problem. I used to own an hp, so I know what it's like to have overheating. The Dolby tuned speakers are a godsend, and I can actually blast music and hear audio when I'm watching a video (without the need for heaphones). The chiclet keyboards have nice aesthetic appeal, although it's not as responsive as the best laptops out there, but it's still very highly above average. When I first received the laptop, I was actually surprised and turned off by how small it actually is compared to the acer 14 inch inspirons. After one day's use, I got used to it, and the 14 inch inspiron actually felt too big and clunky. This is perfect portability. The battery life is great. I've actually streamed long movies for my friends using this computer, and they were very much surprised by how much battery life it had left after the movie. At first, I was very disappointed by the lack of a disk drive, and I actually thought about returning it for that reason. I didn't return it because external drives are pretty cheap and I have not needed to use a disk drive since I bought the computer (in fact, I can't even remember the last time I needed a disk drive). The only thing missing that would make this laptop perfect: backlit keyboards and a solid state hard drive. The latter you can always buy and replace, and the former...well too bad. I'd give it 9/10.
